Analyst ReportTablet Updates to Drive Adoption
An update to Windows XP Tablet PC Edition in 2004 will improve handwriting recognition and Office 2003 support. With Tablet PC Edition 2004, a superset of Windows XP Professional that enables users to enter data directly on the screen with a stylus, Microsoft has decided not to wait for the next major release of Windows, in 2005 or later, to make incremental improvements it feels are necessary to drive adoption beyond specialized applications.
Language Pack, Kit Accompany OS Update
Scheduled for beta test in early 2004, and release by the middle of the year, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2004 will deliver improvements in four major areas:
- Ink-to-text conversion will be improved: conversion is now done on the fly, rather than after the user has completed input
- Integration with Office 2003 no longer requires an add-on pack, but is automatic upon installation of the latest version of Office
- The Tablet PC Input Panel (TIP) has been redesigned so that it no longer remains docked at the edge
