Analyst ReportTeams App Management Migrates to App-Centric
- App-centric management for Teams apps, first announced in Nov. 2023, replaces and improves upon permission policy-based app management.
- It associates permissions to use Teams apps with the app itself, instead of permission policies assigned to users.
- The migration to app-centric management, which started in Aug. 2024, is planned for completion by July 2025.
- Organizations that missed the self-migration window (due to close in mid-May) should review their app permissions in the Teams admin center.
Teams app-centric management allows administrators to control which Teams apps are available to users in an organization, using a combination of global permissions to set defaults and per-app permissions for specific users or groups of users. It replaces permission policies, which involved creating custom policies for apps and assigning those policies to users, which was more complex to manage and difficult to audit. The migration to app-centric management is under way and due to complete in July 2025. Most organizations already have been migrated, but administrators that previously used permission policies should audit their migrated permissions for accuracy.
