Adding calling to Teams requires multiple services and can involve deciding among several options that are not included in any licensing suite or package. This illustration shows the components involved in Teams phone services for public cloud customers. The hosted Teams platform, shown at top, was included in most Microsoft 365 suites prior to Apr. 1, 2024, and it is purchased as an add-on to Microsoft 365 Enterprise suites for new customers after that date.

Teams Phone, shown in the center, provides the hosted private branch exchange (PBX) capabilities required for users in Teams to place or receive conventional phone calls, including call routing and voice mail, and features like call queues and auto attendants. For users, Teams Phone is licensed via one of two add-ons depending on the Microsoft 365 suite already assigned:

  • Teams Phone Standard is included in Microsoft 365 E5 with Teams and can be purchased as an add-on to E3 with Teams
  • Teams Phone for Frontline Workers can be purchased
