  • Azure DevOps is a set of Microsoft-hosted software development services.
  • Its services include source code control, project and build management, collaborative development, test planning and execution, and deployment.
  • Despite similarities with GitHub, Azure DevOps is likely to remain the preference for enterprises and complex projects.

Azure DevOps consists of five Azure services that can be deployed and managed using the Web-based Azure DevOps portal. (For an illustration, see “Azure DevOps Portal.”) Customers can use any subset of the Azure DevOps services, and they work with non-Microsoft technologies such as Linux, macOS, and various development frameworks and programming languages.

Azure DevOps Server (formerly called Team Foundation Server) is on-premises software that offers most Azure DevOps functionality. Microsoft focuses on delivering the latest features in the Azure DevOps service; Azure DevOps Server releases roll up features that have been offered first in the hosted service.
