Upon launching Visual Studio (VS) 2012, Microsoft announced that updates to the product would be delivered on a more regular, predictable schedule than previously. VS 2010, for example, only received a single service pack that was released just under a year after the product became generally available. In contrast, three VS 2012 Updates were released before the VS 2013 preview became available in June 2013, at a rate of one Update about every three months. (A fourth VS 2012 Update appeared as a release candidate in July 2013.)

VS 2012 Update 1, released in Nov. 2012, added features for teams using the Agile development process, new testing capabilities for Web applications and SharePoint applications, and more features for developing Windows 8 applications.

VS 2012 Update 2, released in Apr. 2013, delivered more features and fixes. Improvements in Update 2 (which is a cumulative release that includes Update 1) include the following:

  • Tags that help organize work items in product backlogs
