System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 R2, the next version of Microsoft’s tool for provisioning, monitoring, and storing virtual machines (VMs), was released to manufacturing in Aug. 2009 and will be generally available for volume licensing customers on Oct. 1, 2009. Improvements to VMM 2008 R2 work with new features of Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, such as Live Migration of VMs and dynamic changes to virtual hard disks. Live Migration, in particular, helps Microsoft compete more effectively with VMware, which already has a similar feature.

Changes Since Beta

Although most of the features of VMM 2008 R2 were available in the beta, several additions were made prior to release of the final product, including queuing of Live Migration and VM vSphere 4.0 support.

Migration queuing. One limitation of Hyper-V Live Migration is that a host can participate in only one live migration (as either the source or destination for the VM being moved) at a time. VMM 2008 R2 can detect when a pending live migration fails due to an active live migration and queue up additional requests in the background.
