New edition packaging and pricing for the Visual Studio 2010 product line eliminate the Team System brand while continuing and improving on the application life-cycle management tool’s functionality. A promotional offer provides an edition upgrade for VS 2008 customers with Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Premium subscriptions. The new product lineup should help organizations select the best development solution, but the highest VS 2010 edition costs 9% more than the highest VS 2008 edition.

Team System Brand Eliminated

Packaging of VS features has changed substantially between VS 2008 and VS 2010. In particular, the Team System brand, first introduced with Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2005, and its separate editions (Developer, Test, Architect, and Database) have been eliminated. However, VSTS technology, including Team Foundation Server (TFS), Microsoft’s server for build management, source code control, and software project management, lives on and has received substantial enhancements. Organizations can buy TFS as a stand-alone product with Client Access Licenses (CALs), and TFS is also a benefit of MSDN subscription coverage on the VS integrated development environment (IDE).
