  • Visual Studio Codespaces is a service in preview that hosts and helps manage development environments.
  • The service provides a lightweight Web-based integrated development environment (IDE).
  • The service could save time and reduce local hardware requirements, especially for developers who work on multiple projects that use different OSs, programming languages, frameworks, and tools.

Why VS Codespaces?

Visual Studio (VS) Codespaces (previously named Visual Studio Online) aims to reduce the complexities of managing development environments.

Developers often work simultaneously on multiple projects. Each project requires a development environment that has technology dependencies (such as OSs, programming languages, frameworks, and runtimes) installed and configured and tools (such as editors and debuggers) prepared according to the developers’ preferences. Furthermore, developers are often called upon by colleagues to review code and debug problems in environments that differ from those in which they are currently working.
