Visual Studio .NET (VS.NET) 2003 is currently circulating in beta form, and Microsoft plans to release the finished product in Apr. 2003. Code-named Everett, VS.NET 2003 will be a minor release providing supported versions of some formerly free, unsupported add-ons. To help spur adoption, Microsoft will offer current VS.NET customers a significant discount on upgrades for a limited time.

Most notable among the add-ons rolled into VS.NET are the following:

  • The Smart Device Extensions, .NET Compact Framework, and ASP.NET Mobile Controls, which enable developers to write applications for the Pocket PC, wireless phones, and other mobile devices
  • Managed data providers for Oracle and ODBC databases, which will speed performance for applications using those data sources
  • Visual J#, a Java-language development tool for building applications that run on the .NET Framework
  • The Web Services SDK, which provides test implementations of proposed specifications for Web services security, routing,
