Five different license offerings related to Windows Embedded 8 are available through Microsoft volume licensing programs, such as Enterprise Agreements and Select Plus, starting in July 2013. Previously, embedded licenses were available through the OEM channel only. The change will benefit organizations using Windows for specialized devices such as point-of-service terminals and kiosks, by enabling them to gain access to premium Windows features and license OS upgrades through Software Assurance (SA).

The chart below lists the Windows Embedded 8-related license offerings available for purchase through volume licensing programs, the prerequisites for purchase, and the special capabilities or use rights each provides. In general, the volume license options complement the three editions offered through the OEM channel—Windows Embedded 8 Standard, Windows Embedded 8 Pro, and Windows Embedded 8 Industry Pro:

  • One license, the Windows Embedded 8 Industry Pro Upgrade, allows a legacy embedded
