Azure can host Web services, which are becoming the dominant API technology for applications serving diverse clients, particularly external clients over the Internet. Azure can also act as an intermediary between applications, including applications deployed on-premises or elsewhere outside of Azure. For Web services and application integration, Azure services can reduce the complexities of maintaining Internet-facing network infrastructure, simplify firewall configurations, and improve reliability through asynchronous inter-application communication.

The most important Azure services for Web services and application integration include the following:

  • Azure API Apps, a service that provides hosting, management, security, and other infrastructure for Web services, and a library of Web services for application integration
  • Azure Logic Apps service, a service that provides workflow, business rule processing, message processing, and other application integration services for systems built
