  • Two technologies could help organizations distribute updates to multiple devices updating concurrently to the same OS version.
  • Both could reduce network performance among clients during download but improve overall download performance.
  • Organizations should configure settings for the Delivery Optimization technology, even if they do not plan to use the feature.

Windows 10 includes two technologies, Branch Cache and Delivery Optimization, that can reduce download traffic associated with updates to multiple Windows 10 devices (including both physical and virtual devices), if all of the PCs are being updated concurrently to the same version of the OS. It is likely that most organizations are not using either technology for OS updates today, but given the frequency and size of Windows 10 feature updates, organizations may want to consider the use of one or the other.

Two Options Reduce Download Traffic

Both Branch Cache and Delivery Optimization are intended to minimize the WAN traffic required for downloading updates, but have no impact on final download size to an individual client. Both can be used with Windows express update delivery, which does affect download sizes for OS updates.
