Analyst ReportWindows 10 Version 1809 Recall, Release
- Windows 10 version 1809 is available again after a lengthy recall due to a data-destroying bug.
- Organizations might choose to stay on version 1803 and skip 1809 entirely.
Problems with the Known Folder Redirection (KFR) feature required Microsoft to recall Windows 10 version 1809 after it became generally available on Oct. 2, 2018. After repairing the problem, Microsoft made the version generally available for the second time on Nov. 13, 2018. However, organizations may want to consider remaining on Windows 10 version 1803 until the next major version becomes generally available in the second half of 2019, to give the Windows team time to improve its servicing processes and ensure it is putting out stable versions.
Recall and Release
Problems with KFR were reported to Microsoft prior to the general availability of version 1809 in October but were not addressed in the final version made generally available. Therefore, a significant number of early adopters, whom Microsoft calls “seekers” because they act to get updates as soon as they are available, lost data due to the KFR bug after updating the OS. It was not until data loss began to be reported publicly that Microsoft stopped distributing 1809 through all channels.
