The inclusion of Silverlight for Windows Embedded applications and Internet Explorer Embedded for Web browsing with pan and zoom, touch, and gesture input strengthens Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3, released to manufacturing in Sept. 2009, as a platform for Internet-connected devices. However, the latest version of Silverlight, Silverlight 3, is not supported, and accompanying CE developer tools are not tested for Windows 7.

Windows Embedded CE is one of several Microsoft embedded OSs and offers device developers a small (approximately 300KB, with 700 components), processor-independent (ARM, MIPS, x86), real-time OS with APIs that resemble those of Windows. It is popular for small, portable (lightweight and battery-powered), Internet-connected devices, and it is the base OS for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Platform.

User Interface Improvements for Developers

Consumers expect portable devices to offer well-designed user interfaces without regard to the size or orientation of the screen or the availability of a full-sized keyboard. CE 6.0 R3 includes improvements for application developers building user interfaces, including new platforms for interactive applications and enhanced support for touch and gestures.
