Windows IoT Enterprise is a binary equivalent of a related Windows client OS Enterprise version for fixed-function devices. Fundamentally, Windows IoT Enterprise is designed for OEMs to preinstall the OS on fixed-function or single specialized application-based devices that are sold to a customer. Licenses for OEMs to create such devices are available via distributors.

A Windows IoT Enterprise volume license is available for customers with such devices to upgrade existing systems. Such licenses are nontransferable.

Product: Windows client OS, Windows Enterprise Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC)

From a roadmap perspective, Windows IoT Enterprise follows the roadmap for the Windows client OS or Windows Enterprise LTSC on which it is based.

There is a Windows IoT Enterprise version tied to the equivalent General Availability Channel (GAC) version, which follows the same support life-cycle as the GAC version; and a second version tied to the equivalent Windows Enterprise LTSC, which offers 10 years of support.
