  • Windows Quick Machine Recovery could help customers restore unbootable Windows 11 PCs, as after the 2024 CrowdStrike incident.
  • QMR relies on Windows Recovery Environment to connect to the Internet and look for an available fix from Microsoft.
  • A fix must be published by Microsoft to remediate issues; QMR does not “roll back” PCs or take other actions.
  • Customers still need to account for BitLocker key management and recovery, meaning interaction with individual PCs will still likely be required.

Windows Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) offers a potential “last chance” repair solution for otherwise unbootable Windows 11 PCs by using a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection to connect to Microsoft’s Windows Update to see if a repair solution is available. The fix can then be applied manually or automatically, depending on configuration. Since fixes must still be provided by Microsoft, and BitLocker management complexities can still arise, the solution is not perfect. However, it could accelerate the recovery process of large numbers of remote PCs, as after the CrowdStrike-induced mass failure in 2024.
