Windows Server 2016 includes Internet Information Services (IIS) 10, an update to the Web server role of Windows Server. IIS 10 supports new features including Windows Containers, Nano Server, improved PowerShell administration, and HTTP/2, which can benefit organizations working to improve Web application deployment and automate administration processes. IIS 10 retains a high level of compatibility with Web applications implemented for earlier versions of IIS, easing application migration. Customers considering an upgrade to or deployment of Windows Server 2016 should evaluate the new features of IIS 10 as well as consider their options for migrating existing Web applications.

Container, Nano Server, and More PowerShell Support

IIS is installed as a component of the Web server role for Windows Server, providing a hosting platform for Web sites and applications. IIS is commonly used to host ASP.NET applications, and it can be used with other frameworks such as PHP and Java. Server applications from Microsoft and other vendors, such as Exchange and SharePoint, use IIS as a supporting component to provide Web-based user interfaces. IIS is used in the Azure Cloud Services Web Role and Azure Web Apps, two options for hosting Web applications in Microsoft data centers. Popular alternatives to IIS include the open source Apache and NGINX Web servers.
