Analyst ReportWindows Server 2019 Storage Enhancements
- Improvements in Windows Server 2019 can increase storage capacity, performance, and resilience over Windows Server 2016.
- A new Storage Migration Service role can help migrate data from older versions of Windows Server.
- Preconfigured hardware appliances from Microsoft partners such as Dell EMC, HPE, and Lenovo are not expected until mid-2019.
- Customers not interested in Windows Server storage features may want to focus on Windows Server 2016.
Windows Server 2019, the latest Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) version of Windows Server, will interest companies using Windows Server and stock hardware to build networked disk storage arrays and file servers. Improvements to storage capacity, performance, and reliability for these roles, particularly for clustered deployments, could make it attractive for on-premises data-center environments.
Enhancements to Storage and Reliability
Windows Server 2019 offers greater capacity and performance for Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), which was introduced in Windows Server 2016. Additionally, updates to failover clusters can increase reliability during planned maintenance, and a new cluster sets feature can enable groupings of cluster sets for additional capacity and flexibility.
