Windows Storage Server 2008 R2, a specialized version of Windows Server 2008 R2, was released to OEMs in Sept. 2010. Storage Server 2008 R2 provides a software platform for building storage appliances that integrate with Active Directory, support the latest and fastest version of the Server Message Block (SMB) file-sharing protocol, and offer administrators an intuitive management interface. Customers should be able to start purchasing Storage Server 2008 R2—based devices from OEMs such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard in late 2010 or early 2011.
Previous versions of Storage Server included support for the following:
- The SMB and the Network File System file-sharing protocols
- The Windows Distributed File System (DFS), which helps manage storage by supplying a state-based, multimaster replication engine that is optimized for WAN environments, and a name space that groups shared folders located on different servers and presents them as a virtual tree of folders
- Single-instance storage,
