Windows Thin PC (WinTPC) began a Customer Technology Preview (CTP) in Apr. 2011. WinTPC is a small-footprint, locked-down OS that enables existing Windows 7 PCs to be used as thin client devices, which offer better security and simpler management for some tasks than a full PC. Unlike Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs (WinFLP), which addressed extending the life of older PCs, WinTPC facilitates deploying thin clients with either a Remote Desktop Services or virtual desktop infrastructure without having to purchase dedicated thin-client terminals. Like WinFLP, the final released version of WinTPC will require Software Assurance.

Windows Thin PC

WinTPC is based on Windows Embedded Standard 7, Microsoft’s embedded OS for kiosks, terminals, thin clients, and other types of special-purpose devices. It provides a minimal OS that can run the Remote Desktop Connection client software, which enables a device to send input to and display output from a remote application or desktop that is hosted by a server in the data center.
