Xamarin, a company that focuses on cross-platform mobile application development tools, was acquired by Microsoft in Feb. 2016. Xamarin technology allows developers to use the C# programming language and the .NET Framework to write applications that work across Android, iOS, and Windows platforms. Xamarin also directs the Mono open source effort to implement C# and the .NET Framework on non-Windows platforms such as Linux. The acquisition will probably lead to further emphasis, support, and integration of Xamarin’s offerings into Microsoft’s, which could help organizations leverage their existing .NET and C# skills for cross-platform mobile development.

Acquired Tools Help Cross-Platform Strategy

Xamarin products and services, which have been popular among large enterprises and game companies and have attracted over 1 million developers, include the following:

Xamarin Platform enables C# code to run across Android, iOS, and Windows while using native APIs for each platform

Xamarin.Forms consists of controls that help create user interfaces that work across Android, iOS, and Windows
