Azure Data Catalog registration can be performed with a downloadable registration tool, through the Web portal, or via a Representational State Transfer (REST) API. Users can register on-premises, hosted, and local data sources provided they have access rights to the data source.

In this example, the downloadable tool is connected to a SQL Server 2014 instance and the DOM_ProjectSuite database is selected (far left). A list of the database’s available objects (tables, views, and stored procedures) is displayed (middle) for the user to select. A subset of objects has been chosen for registration (far right).

Clicking the Register button (bottom right) will extract and upload each object’s structural elements (schema and metadata) to the service, where other users can annotate and find them. Users can elect to include preview information from the data sources, which results in reading and saving a small number of records as a snapshot, potentially exposing sensitive data to other users in the service.
