Several Azure-based data gateway and data movement offerings deliver features for accessing and moving data between on-premises sources and Microsoft-hosted services. Some of the offerings support several Azure services, while others are limited to a single Azure service, as they are optimized for that service.

Comparing Offerings

The offerings include the following:

Azure Data Gateway is a combination of locally installed software and Azure services that work together to control the flow of data between select Microsoft-hosted services and on-premises data sources. It works with Power BI and several other Microsoft-hosted, multitenant services.

Azure Data Factory gateway, called a self-hosted integration runtime, is locally installed software that works specifically with the Data Factory service, a Microsoft-hosted extract, transform, and load (ETL) service that helps developers automate data integration and transformation from on-premises and Azure-hosted sources. The gateway features can help create high-performance data movement pipelines that transfer data between on-premises SQL Server and several Azure-based data stores. It works exclusively with Data Factory, which does not work with the other gateway technologies.
