Analyst ReportUnderstanding Azure Data Gateway
- Customers can use the Azure Data Gateway software and services to move database reporting, analysis, and other functions to Microsoft-hosted services, while keeping the source data on-premises.
- Systems built on Data Gateway can offer lower upfront costs and better access for remote and mobile users than pure on-premises systems.
- Data Gateway still lacks important enterprise management features to prevent data leaks, and it presents licensing compliance risks.
Azure Data Gateway is a set of software and Microsoft-hosted services that provide access to on-premises databases. It enables a Microsoft-hosted service such as Power BI (for reporting) or Logic Apps (application integration) to query and update a customer’s locally hosted databases.
Overview
A data gateway includes locally installed software, typically on a Windows Server, and several Azure cloud service components working together to provide access to on-premises data sources. (For more details, see the illustration “Azure Data Gateway Components“.)
