  • SQL Server 2019 includes reengineered database recovery components to reduce downtime.
  • Other database engine updates improve real-time indexing and automate query tuning to speed up database performance.

SQL Server 2019 (currently in preview) is expected to include new performance features to reduce downtime and speed database response, but some features are limited to Windows Server 2019 and require new hardware.

Faster Database Recovery

A longstanding challenge to overall SQL Server performance and availability is the time needed to recover from a database failure, especially for databases used for large or long-running transactions. The traditional recovery process requires reapplying and rolling back transactions from logs written to disk to bring the database to the state before it failed.

SQL Server 2019 introduces accelerated database recovery, which is the result of low-level changes to the database engine that allow SQL Server 2019 to significantly reduce the amount of time required to recover from a failure.
