Microsoft’s collaboration offerings focus on a variety of activities ranging from virtual workspaces that offer discussions, content sharing, and telephony to large-scale project management and activity tracking. These offerings, which are primarily cloud based but also have some on-premises components, are classified based on their scope (one-to-one, team-level, organization-level). Customers evaluating Microsoft’s collaboration offerings should consider offerings based on their suitability to task, potential additional costs, and marketplace longevity.

The ratings Directions used is based on the following logic:

Underlying technology refers to the array of cloud and on-premises products use to build and support the collaboration service. This is a good indicator to identify products that may be subject to rewrites or replacement because the underlying technology is aging.

User base shows how many customers there are to fund future investment and who would be affected by retirement of the technology. Microsoft does not typically publish usage figures for technologies, but history and software version requirements provide a rough estimate.
