RoadmapDatabase Services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB Timelines
Azure Database Services for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB have a variety of versions and timelines based on deployment options and the service policies of the associated open-source controlling community groups. Updates to the underlying core products are determined with their governing bodies, and retirement of versions is usually triggered by the introduction of a new supported version.
PostgreSQL has two deployment models (Single Server and Flexible Server) that support different versions. The PostgreSQL community releases new versions annually and retires older versions after five years. Flexible Server supports versions 11 through 16, while Single Server (which only supports version 11) is deprecated and will retire in Mar. 2025.
MySQL has two deployment models (Single Server and Flexible Server) that support version 5.7 and 8.0. Single Server deployments are scheduled to retire in Sept. 2024, and version 5.7 leaves support in Flexible Server a year later in Sept. 2025. Oracle (the owner of MySQL) determines the release and retirement of versions. Oracle has not announced plans for a newer version, but should it arrive, Microsoft will likely support it within a few months of release.
