Project Migration Options Are Limited

Microsoft plans to run the new Project for the Web service in parallel with the current Project Online service for some time and has not set a shutdown date for Project Online. However, options are limited when it comes to interoperation between the two services or for migrating existing projects from Project Online to Project for the Web.

Projects from both services are visible in the Project Home Web interface, and the Project Roadmap tracking tool can build roadmaps that aggregate projects from both. Power BI can run reports on projects and resource data from both services. However, there is no ability to edit or share project data directly between the two services.

Project for the Web can import .mpp files created by the Project 2016 desktop or later, but Project for the Web has lower limits for project size and duration. Projects that exceed these limits cannot be imported, and projects that use capabilities not in Project for the Web may not be fully imported.
