Service Fabric is a free microservice orchestration platform that can enable highly scalable, distributed, reliable solutions. It works best with solutions with separable components that can scale independently. The platform software can run in Azure, other clouds, and on-premises. Service Fabric has overlapping functionality with the popular Kubernetes container orchestration technology that Microsoft also supports in Azure.

Product: Service Fabric

Near Term (2025–2026)

Service Fabric was introduced before Kubernetes became a widely adopted microservice platform. Since 2023, development on Service Fabric has come to a near standstill.

Where there were once annual updates containing new capabilities, the last release—version 11 in June 2025—is essentially a minor update containing primarily bug fixes and updates to various components, such as the .NET and Java SDKs.

Long Term (Beyond 2026)

Customers should expect little to no enhancements beyond basic compatibility and security updates. Those looking for a more robust microservices architecture should explore various Kubernetes-based alternatives.
