Azure NetApp Files is a cloud-based network-attached storage (NAS) service that runs on specialized hardware and software developed by NetApp and deployed in Microsoft’s datacenters.

Product: Azure NetApp Files

Near Term (2026)

In addition to the new Flexible tier, NetApp Files has seen a steady stream of enhancements, including:

  • User and group quota reports
  • Ransomware protection, which helps organizations detect and recover from ransomware attacks on NetApp volumes
  • Zone-redundant storage (in preview), which provides continuous access to data even if an entire Azure Availability Zone is offline

Long Term (Beyond 2026)

NetApp files is jointly developed by Microsoft and NetApp, and both companies seem committed to the partnership, making major disruptions or retirements unlikely.

Given the priority Microsoft places on its Copilot offering, some form of integration with NetApp Files seems inevitable.

Directions Recommends

Consider NetApp Files for extended existing investments into Azure. Organizations that have already invested heavily in NetApp storage and capabilities on-premises could find that Azure NetApp Files allows them to move or extend their workloads into Azure with minimal change. However, native Azure storage will likely be a better choice for net new Azure workloads without existing NetApp dependencies.
