Azure OpenAI service enables developers to use large language models (LLMs) developed by OpenAI (a Microsoft partner) to create applications that support natural language input, text generation, summarization, and other features. Azure OpenAI service is one of several third-party models Microsoft provides under the banner Foundry Models. Other options include models from Anthropic, DeepSeek, Meta, xAI, and others.

Near Term (2026)

Because Azure OpenAI service is a hosted version of OpenAI’s underlying models, Microsoft’s roadmap is determined by OpenAI. But Microsoft generally moves quickly to make any new models available through its OpenAI services.

On Mar. 5, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-5.4, its most capable model to date, with Microsoft quickly making it available through its OpenAI service on the same date. OpenAI has faced increasing competition from Google and Anthropic, leading the company to eliminate what it calls “side quests” in order to focus on models for coding and other business tasks. As such, it is likely to continue to release new models, with Microsoft quickly making them available.
