Azure Cosmos DB is Microsoft’s fully managed, globally distributed NoSQL and vector database service for operational applications that require low-latency access, high availability, and rapid scaling. The request unit (RU)-based service supports document, key-value, graph, and wide-column data through APIs for NoSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, Gremlin, and Table. Each account selects one API and has its own data, capacity, security, and regional configuration; the APIs are compatibility choices, not interchangeable query interfaces over a shared database.

Two products formerly carrying the Cosmos DB name now have separate roadmaps:

Azure DocumentDB is the name for the former vCore-based Cosmos DB for MongoDB service. It’s discussed in the Azure DocumentDB roadmap entry.

Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL will retire on Mar. 31, 2029. Microsoft recommends Azure Database for PostgreSQL elastic clusters for customers that require scale-out PostgreSQL.
