Azure Data Catalog was Microsoft’s first centralized, hosted registry of enterprise data sources designed to simplify the sharing of approved data sources for business intelligence (BI) and application purposes. Azure Data Catalog was retired on May 15, 2024.

Microsoft recommends Azure Data Catalog users migrate to Microsoft Purview‘s suite of data governance services.

Product: Azure Data Catalog

Near- and Long-Term Roadmap

Microsoft Purview is subsuming Data Catalog features, provides most of the same capabilities, and addresses many of the shortcomings in Data Catalog, such as data lineage. Microsoft has not explicitly deprecated Data Catalog, but it recommends using Purview for “updated Data Catalog features” and states existing Data Catalog users must migrate to Purview functionality by Aug. 2025.

Resources

Azure Purview is discussed in “Govern Your Data Estate with Azure Purview” on page 24 of the Dec. 2021 Update.

Data Catalog is at https://azure.microsoft.com/services/data-catalog.
