Edge Browser

The Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) browser is included in supported versions of Windows client OS available from the General Availability Channel (GAC).

Servicing and Support

The Edge browser does not follow the Modern Lifecycle Policy of the version of Windows it is delivered in. Instead, Edge versions are updated at Microsoft’s discretion.

Edge

In Jan. 2020, Microsoft released a new separate browser, also branded Edge, built with technology from the open-source Chromium project, which is more compatible with sites developed for other modern browsers. The new Edge shipped as the default browser of Windows 10 versions starting in Oct. 2020 with the 20H2 version of the OS. It is a required component of future Windows 10 versions and cannot be uninstalled.

In late 2023, Microsoft began to integrate Copilot with Bing (previously Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise) into Edge. It provides a conversational UI to access publicly available data and data the user submits. If a user is accessing Edge using a Microsoft Account, then Copilot is free. If a user is assessing Edge with an Entra ID account, then Copilot is included in Microsoft 365 E3 and F3 (or higher license), Business Standard, and Business Premium subscriptions.
