Edge is a Chromium-based browser included in supported versions of the Windows client OS. It has long been debated whether Edge is a component of the OS, or merely an application.
Licensing: Edge is included in the Windows Client OS Edition Packaging.
Near- and Long-Term Plans
Edge is updated frequently, at Microsoft’s sole discretion. Therefore, tracking pending feature changes and availability of new features is unpredictable. However, some information is available via the Edge Insider Discussions.
Servicing and Timeline
Microsoft provides four options, called channels, to control how often Edge is updated with new features for an organization:
- Extended Stable Channel—a channel for enterprises that manage Edge with tools such as Intune; it uses an eight-week release cycle to deliver cumulative feature updates that align with even-numbered releases, with Feature updates from odd-numbered releases packaged and delivered as part of the subsequent even-numbered release
