  Roadmap

Identity Manager

The Identity Manager software synchronizes user identity data, such as group memberships and physical office and e-mail addresses, across directories maintained by other applications and OS services, including the Windows Server Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) component, the Microsoft-hosted Entra ID (previously Azure Active Directory [AAD]) service, third-party Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directories, and many other directories. Identity Manager also helps organizations manage user credentials for secure authentication, such as smart cards and digital certificates.

Identity Manager is typically called MIM, for Microsoft Identity Manager. It has undergone many name changes.

Latest Version

The most recent major version is Identity Manager 2016 SP2, released in Oct. 2019. This release included limited new features and primarily added support for Windows Server 2019, SQL Server 2017, Exchange Server 2019, and SharePoint Server 2019. Identity Manager 2016 installations should now be updated to SP2 to remain supported. The product regularly receives important hotfixes, and increasingly features are deprecated or removed. It rarely receives new major versions or new features.
