Azure Managed Redis is an Azure-hosted, Microsoft-managed caching service built on Redis software. Redis is an open-source, in-memory key-value data store that functions as a database, cache, and message broker. It supports a broad range of data structures, making it useful for real-time applications, session storage, and caching. Managed Redis is based on Redis Enterprise, a commercial offering from Redis (the company) that offers additional performance, availability, and security features compared to Redis Community Edition, the open-source version. Managed Redis replaces Azure Cache for Redis, which is being retired, and supports newer Redis versions (7.4 with 8.0 planned), tighter Azure integration, and additional capabilities not offered by Cache for Redis.

In 2024, after Redis made significant changes to its license terms, several cloud providers, including AWS and Google, collaborated on a fork of Redis known as Valkey to be managed by the Linux Foundation. Although Microsoft continues to work with Redis, the others have subsequently used Valkey as the basis for their managed offerings.
