They are part of Microsoft’s legacy Project line of project management software and support the structured project management methods (sometimes called “waterfall” methods) common in engineering, construction, and other industries with complex projects.

Near Term (2026-2027)

Project Online desktop client is serviced like the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise suite (see fig. 1). Organizations must upgrade roughly once per year at a minimum to remain eligible for Microsoft product support, so Project Online desktop client gets new features sooner than Project LTSC Professional. But to date, new features have been rare, and there is no reason to expect anything other than templates in the near term.

Project Professional and Standard LTSC (Long Term Servicing Channel). The 2016 and 2019 versions of both Project LTSC Standard and Professional left support Oct. 14, 2025. The 2021 version running on Windows 10 also left support on that date, but it is supported until Oct. 2026 when running on Windows 11. Organizations should migrate to the just-released 2024 version, which will be supported until Oct. 9, 2029.
