The Project client applications provide project and resource management for project managers. They are part of Microsoft’s legacy Project line of project management software and support the structured project management methods (sometimes called “waterfall” methods) common in engineering, construction, and other industries with complex projects.

Near Term (2025-2026)

Most Project legacy software versions lose support on Oct. 14, 2025. The diagram shows Microsoft product support status and retirement dates for Project Online desktop client, Project Professional, and Project Server. The same coordinated wave of support retirements affects Office, Exchange Server, and SharePoint Server. It will prompt many customers to move to cloud services like Project Online, or to subscription software like Project Server SE.

Project Online desktop client is serviced like the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise suite: organizations must upgrade roughly once per year at a minimum to remain eligible for Microsoft product support, so Project Online desktop client gets new features sooner than Project LTSC Professional. But to date, new features have been rare, and there is no reason to expect anything other than templates in the near term.
