This chart (fig 1.) displays server application compatibility with Windows Server and SQL Server versions under Mainstream or Extended support. Versions supported only by Extended Security Updates (ESUs), such as Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012, are not displayed.

Checked indicates supported combinations of versions that Microsoft has announced. In some cases, applications may require running SQL Server at a lower compatibility level. Some combinations will require an application or OS update (not listed) to be eligible for support.

Unchecked indicates combinations that are not supported or that have no announced plans for support.

Server application compatibility with SQL Server 2025 operating at its default compatibility level (170) is limited to the most recent application versions. However, earlier versions of several server applications can use SQL Server databases running at lower compatibility levels, provided they don’t rely on other features of SQL Server that have changed, like reporting services.
