Azure Site Recovery (ASR) is a subscription-based service that helps organizations use Azure infrastructure to establish disaster recovery (DR) for VM-based workloads. It works between an on-premises site and Azure or between two Azure regions. ASR replicates machines or VMs from one site to another and can monitor service availability and orchestrate recovery in the event of a service outage or a disaster.

Product: Site Recovery

Near Term (2025–2026)

Recent enhancements to ASR include the following:

  • Support for new Linux distributions and versions is added on a regular basis, including updates to support for CentOS, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, and SUSE distributions
  • A pricing calculator, in the form of an Excel workbook with macros, became available in Feb. 2025 for estimating the TCO of Azure-to-Azure ASR scenarios
  • Shared Disk support became generally available in Apr. 2025, enabling support of workloads running Windows Server Failover Cluster on Azure
