Azure is a Microsoft-hosted cloud platform for applications. It can reduce the cost of purchasing and maintaining server infrastructure to support internal-use or Web-based applications by outsourcing some functions to Microsoft’s data centers. In particular, it can help organizations meet peak capacity without permanent investments in the hardware and software necessary for peak loads. (Windows Azure was renamed Microsoft Azure in Apr. 2014.)

Azure includes the following services:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) features, including Microsoft-hosted virtual machines (which can run Windows Server or Linux) and support for virtual private networks (VPNs) between Azure and on-premises deployments
Azure Web Sites, a Platform as a Service (PaaS) feature that provides an IIS-based Web server with an associated database and preinstalled application frameworks and third-party open source applications, such as applications for content management and blogging
Mobile Services, which helps
