Azure Cosmos DB is a multimodal database service that can host multiple database formats, such as documents, graphs, and relational data, in a single account, where they can share scaling and security infrastructure. The service can support small departmental applications, but it is also designed for distributed data-intensive applications that need high performance and global distribution and/or scaling.

The service separates cost by deployment type, such as:

  • Standard provisioned throughput, for applications with a defined performance level; managed by the customer
  • Autoscale provisioned throughput, for applications with unpredictable capacity requirements; managed by the service within parameters set by the customer
  • Serverless, for small applications with frequent non-use or variable use; managed by the service with no minimum performance level.

Cost is a combination of data processing (throughput), primary storage, backup storage, and occasionally transaction fees. Replicating a deployment between Azure regions is a key feature of the service that improves local performance and availability; however, adding multiple regions replicates both throughput and storage, so costs increase proportionally for each region added.
