The Desktop Optimization Pack is a collection of technologies to help organizations centrally manage their PCs, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance security. Sold as a subscription costing approximately US$8 annually per PC, it can only be purchased for PCs that have SA for the Windows client OS or that are covered by a Windows Intune or a Virtual Desktop Access subscription.

The Desktop Optimization Pack—sometimes called the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, or MDOP—includes seven components:

Application Virtualization (App-V) lets applications run in an isolated environment on each user’s computer, which helps prevent conflicts among applications. Organizations can also deploy, update, and remove the applications from centrally managed servers.

Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) enables organizations to centrally define virtual machines (VMs), assign these VMs to authenticated users to run locally on their PCs, and conceal the virtual OS interface so that the user is not aware the application is running in a VM.
