Microsoft is using improvements in Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 2 to reduce objections customers might have to using Windows Embedded for Point of Service and other embedded devices. Windows XP Embedded contains more than 10,000 discrete components that device makers can include or exclude when building an OS image, and Windows XP Embedded with SP2 builds on this with improvements in security, networking, and manageability, as well as some new features.

Security improvements. Windows XP Embedded with SP2 turns on the Windows Firewall by default and includes all of the improvements made to Internet Explorer, such as pop-up blocking. In addition, Microsoft partners such as Computer Associates (CA) and Sygate are providing componentized versions of their antivirus and intrusion-prevention security solutions, which can be included in the embedded OS image.

Network improvements. Windows XP Embedded with SP2 includes the Remote Desktop Protocol version 5.2, which enables device manufacturers to include support for the latest Remote Desktop client and could be helpful for supporting users of the embedded device, in the same way users get help via Remote Desktop on Windows XP Professional. It also supports Bluetooth for connecting peripherals, such as keyboards, mice, and printers.
