Exchange Hosted Services (EHS) is a set of three Microsoft-hosted services designed to augment on-premises installations of Exchange Server (and, in some cases, other e-mail servers). Some of the services can also be used to add other capabilities to Exchange Online. (Formerly known as FrontBridge, EHS should not be confused with Exchange Online or hosted Exchange servers from third-party providers.)
All of the EHS outsource an aspect of an Exchange-based system that customers can perform on-premises if they are willing to accept the potentially arduous task of installing and maintaining complex Exchange architectures and additional software from Microsoft or third parties. Several of the services are more valuable than on-premises solutions precisely because they are off-site; for example, Forefront Online Protection for Exchange intercepts spam—which makes up 90% or more of e-mail traffic—before it reaches a corporate site and consumes WAN and LAN bandwidth.
