Three different groups at Microsoft tackle the healthcare vertical.

The Health and Life Sciences Group is one of several vertical industry groups that are part of the Industry Solutions Organization (ISO) in the company’s U.S. Enterprise and Partner Group. It works primarily in the United States, marketing Microsoft’s business desktop and server products to about 600 large customers (mainly hospitals and pharmaceutical companies) in concert with large or specialized healthcare partners. The group ultimately reports to Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s chief operating officer, through Microsoft’s North American sales and marketing group.

The Worldwide Public Sector Group has a unit focused on promoting Microsoft products and partners to public health agencies and academic healthcare providers (such as teaching hospitals). While most of its work is in the United States (where, in spite of the country’s emphasis on private healthcare, governments provide more than 50% of all healthcare funding), the group also works with national healthcare organizations worldwide. It also engages international agencies that play a role in healthcare, such as standards bodies, the European Commission, and the World Health Organization. Part of the Microsoft sales organization, it ultimately reports to Turner through Microsoft International, the group that handles sales, marketing, and services outside North America.
