SidebarInside the Web Store
A new Microsoft database technology called the Web Storage System, or Web Store for short, is the base data storage technology for both SharePoint Portal Server (code-named Tahoe) and Exchange 2000. The Web Store allows applications to store and retrieve documents using the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV or HTTP-DAV) protocol. (For more information on WebDAV, see “What Is WebDAV?” on page 7 of the Sept. 1999 Update.) The Web Storage System is built using Microsofts Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) technology. Also known as Jet, the ESE is a fully transactional engine that defines a very low-level API to the underlying database structures comprising the Web Store.
The Web Store handles XML and MIME data formats natively, while documents in other binary formats, such as Word files, are encapsulated within MIME.
Access to database items is restricted by Windows 2000 access control lists (ACLs), which are tied back to Windows NT or to Windows 2000 Active Directory user and group accounts.
