Multi-Geo is designed to store data on a per-user or per-group basis. How data will be stored by users participating in collaborative services like Teams and Stream, or on behalf of Microsoft 365 Groups, can be complicated to untangle. 

User data is stored based on the preferred data location (PDL) of a user or Microsoft 365 Group, specified in Azure Active Directory (AAD).

Microsoft Teams user data is stored based on the type of user data being stored:

  • Chat data (1:1 or 1:many chats) are stored based on the PDL of the user who initiated a chat
  • Meeting chat data is stored based on the PDL of the user who organized the meeting
  • Team and channel data is stored based on the PDL of the Microsoft 365 Group that represents the team in AAD.

For Microsoft Stream, user data is also stored based on the type of user data being stored:

  • Videos uploaded to Stream in a 1:1 chat are stored based on the PDL of the user who uploaded the data
  • Meeting recordings are stored based on the PDL of the attendee who
