In Oct. 2004, Microsoft and Cisco announced that they would work together to provide greater interoperability between their respective network security and health assurance technologies, Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP) and Cisco’s Network Admission Control (NAC).

Microsoft and Cisco describe their network protection in a similar fashion-both will essentially enforce policy so that devices connecting to the network must be either up to date (with the correct level of OS and patches) and have antivirus software with current signature files or the device will be denied access, given restricted access, or quarantined until it complies with the policy.

While it’s not yet known whether the companies will be cross-licensing any intellectual property, both companies wanted to assure customers that they would do the following:

  • Share information to help enhance solution compatibility between NAP and NAC
  • Work toward interoperability between the NAP and NAC architectures as these offerings
